On May 22, MTV2 will launch Hip Hop Squares. Inspired by the original Hollywood Squares, the new game show will feature some of the biggest names in hip hop and entertainment.
Since the first official broadcast of Run DMC’s “Rock Box” on MTV in 1984, the worlds of hip hop and film have grown to form a longstanding relationship. Years after the first hip hop music video aired on MTV, artists like 2Pac would venture beyond music videos and into the realm of filmmaking, something that would forever change the paths of success available to hip hop artists.
“The heart of Kansas City is beatin’.” Those were the famous words spoken by Tech N9ne over a decade ago on his now classic tribute, “It’s Alive”, a homage to Kansas City, MO: the city that now houses the empire of an independent king who rose from the Midwest and proved that there was much more than farms and cornfields in his slice of Americana. For most emcees, hometown love means everything. It’s the very foundation of who they are and what they will become. For Tech N9ne, it’s a place of struggle and eventual acceptance.
Like a flashback to a night gone wrong, Tech N9ne’s “Blur” from the KLUSTERFUK EP takes listeners on a hazy and disoriented ride through a jigsaw of events that were nothing more than, well, a blur. While Tech N9ne may not exactly recall the night, the story that unfolds on “Blur” reveals clues that connect the track to a series of wild tweets from Tech N9ne this past winter.
Tech N9ne’s long awaited KLUSTERFUK EP will mark the first release from the Kansas City King in 2012, but more importantly, the EP will also mark the first Tech N9ne project to be entirely produced by a band. Strange Music’s resident group of Miami maniacs, ¡MAYDAY!, has taken the helm on the EP with exclusive production. With the release of “Blur” featuring ¡MAYDAY!’s Wrekonize, it became abundantly clear that Tech N9ne was once again opening the doors to a new chapter in his legacy. Much like the arrival of Everready: The Religion, could KLUSTERFUK be the catalyst to a new Tech N9ne experience?
