Tech N9ne’s latest release in the “Collabos” series, The Gates Mixed Plate, includes the track, “Afterparty” featuring Devin The Dude. Devin takes his time and rides the rhythm of the smoothed-out track provided by Emaydee, adding a change-of-pace feature for Strange Music, Tech N9ne and Kansas City Hip Hop in general. The long-awaited collaboration between Tech and Texas’ own, Devin The Dude, is an ode to the overwhelming amount of support that “The Dude” has drawn from Kansas City. With his voice and flow already made globally recognizable by Dr. Dre on The Chronic 2001, is there something special about the relationship between Devin The Dude and the Hip Hop heads of KC? The love he receives in Killa City not only makes sense geographically, but most Kansas Citians-from the urban hustler to the suburban herb enthusiast-can identify with his layed-back, weeded-out “Just Tryin’ ta Live” persona.
Here is more info on Devin The Dude taken from his Wiki:
Devin Copeland (born June 4, 1970), better known by his stage name, Devin the Dude, is a Houston hip hop artist. He is best known for his unique rapping style, his long career signed to Rap-A-Lot Records, and his 2002 song “Lacville ’79“. Copeland started out as a member of the Odd Squad, later known as the Coughee Brothaz, a group of rappers signed to Rap-A-Lot Records. The label is notable for being the home of hip-hop artists such as Geto Boys, Scarface, and Too Much Trouble. Copeland moved on to become part of Scarface’s Facemob, before going solo in 1998. Copeland has released six solo albums: The Dude (1998), Just Tryin’ ta Live (2002), To tha X-Treme (2004), Waitin’ to Inhale (2007), Landing Gear (2008), and Suite 420 (2010). He also made a number of guest appearances, including on Dr. Dre’s “Fuck You” in 1999, and De La Soul’s “Baby Phat” in 2001.
In 2008, he ended his 15 year relationship with Houston based Rap-A-Lot Records because the label failed to renew his contract. Later that year, he signed with indie label Razor & Tie. Devin is currently being distributed by E1 Entertainment, formerly Koch.
